Product Description

The SKS Longboard Mudguards are based off the very popular Chromoplastics guards, but are longer with bigger spoilers on the bottom tip for extra coverage.

The Longboard mudguards won’t split from debris. Unlike other bike fenders, the Longboard’s are near indestructible thanks to a high strength sandwich construction. High grade aluminium is placed between two layers of plastic for an extremely durable finish.

Adding to the durability of the SKS Longboard set are the stainless steel fittings and stays - these will last years. But ultimately it’s the longer profile and added spoiler that make these mudguards an ideal companion to a commuter bike.

Afternoon to fit

Takes a while to get these "just right". A little bit fidly and the stays are quite tough to saw through. A pain if you try to do that with the guards fitted. These are very very long and i had to remove the splash guard off the front guard so it would not impinge on my feet. Good quality but fiddly to fit.

Excellent coverage

These mudguards provide the best coverage I have seen. I managed to fit them to my roadbike- 25mm tyres- which has no eyelets and a carbon fork. A bit of fettling with some P clips and a cable tie resulted in a good looking and stable set up. To clear the front tyre I had to cut a small rectangular hole in the guard to allow it to be raised up away from the tyre- otherwise the front brake prevented there being sufficient clearance. I smeared superglue around the cut to prevent any splitting later. Finally the stainless stays are very hard to cut- I used a square file and filed a notch in each one which allowed bending and snapping with pliers. Overall, if you are happy to indulge in workarounds I think you could fit these to virtually any bike- certainly steel framed anyway.

Buy them!

I have been looking for a pair of mudguards that will provide the coverage required for solo and also group rides and I found them here! The coverage is amazing keeping water and dirt off my body and also bike frame. It took me a while to fit them and required a slight bending of the front stay to accommodate the disk brakes. I also trimmed the excess from the stays at the front after final adjustments were made. Take your time fitting them and you will not be disappointed.

Offroad Commuting Mudguard

Good guards. They will protect you from mud and rain spray. The front MG is a bit rattly, but I'm using 700x38c snow spike tyres. No problem fitting, but my Surly has plenty of space and bosses for them.

OK - but...

Great for keeping water/mud off your feet and chain. But not indestructible. They are obviously wider than most mudguards and this where the problem occurred. Using a moderately wide rim with 28 tyres and a sidepull brake caused the front mudguard to split due to continuous compression of the guard when braking. Could have been avoided by cutting away part of the mudguard to stop it being squeezed by the brake but I hadn't anticipated it until the damage was done. Also, why can't the manufacturers put the brackets on the outside of the guard so leaving a smooth internal surface to stop splashing and build up of mud at the brackets?!

Good product poor fit

These mudguards were ordered for a Boardman hybrid with wheel size of 700x26. These mudguards unfortunately don't fit and will be returned. Shame as the other SKS products I've ordered are fantastic.

SKS Longboard Mudguard

Great quality product. Fitting is a bit fiddly to get them just right but worth the time. A junior hacksaw to trim the wire struts is essential. Once fitted they look great and protect feetbackside from getting soaked from water on the road.

Good build quality

Materials all high quality. A bit fiddly to fit and translated instructions arent the simplest to follow. Would be nice if a couple of extra stay fittings had been included as its easy to drop them while fitting!

Mudguard Guide

Which mudguards are best for me?

Mudguards come in three main types – full length, clip-on and mountain bike style. Depending on your bike frame you may be able to fit some or all of these types.

Full length mudguards

These traditional looking mudguards are commonly fitted to hybrid and touring bikes. They're great for commuting too as they offer the most protection. The long rear mudguard also keeps the rider behind clean.

You will need a bike frame with eyelets – usually at the apex on the fork and where you rear wheel fits to the frame (at the dropouts). If your bike doesn't have eyelets (most mountain bikes and road bikes) you'll want can consider clip-on mudguards.

Clip-on mudguards

Clip-on mudguards are super easy to fit to your frame and offer a good amount of coverage for you and your frame. Simple fastenings make fitting and removal quick which is great if you want one set of mudguards for multiple bikes.

You can usually fit clip-on mudguards to road bikes with minimal clearance such as race bikes.

MTB style mudguards

Mostly fitted to mountain bikes, these mudguards are designed to mount to your downtube or fork crown and clamped to the seatpost. They're ideal for any bike with suspension and will fit to almost any frame design. Simple attachment means these guards are quick to fit and remove. These mudguards will offer limited protection compared to the other two types, but they will stop much of the spray.

How to choose a compatible mudguard?

Check your wheel size and tyre width

When buying a mudguard you'll have to choose one that will fit your wheel size and cover the width of your tyre.

You can find both these figures on the sidewall of your tyre. You will see a combination of digits such as 700x32 or 27.5x2.40. The first digit is your wheel diameter (size) and the second digit is tyre width. Road bikes are measured in millimeters while mountain bikes are measure in inches.

Check your brake clearance (full length mudguards)

There should be a 20mm gap between the top of your tyre and the mudguard and about 5mm either side. Most standard road caliper brakes offer up to around 40mm while deep drop (also known as long drop) brakes have arms over 55mm to allow room for mudguards.

Depending on the thickness of your tyre, your brake arms may have to extend 50mm or over to reach the braking rim.

What if my bike has suspension?

You can't bolt a mudguard onto the apex of a suspension fork like you can a rigid one. You'll want to make sure the mudguard doesn't touch your wheel when the fork is fully compressed.

If you have a full suspension MTB you're main concern isn't likely getting wet and muddy. If you run a dropper post you won't want the mudguard clamp getting in the way, so it's best to avoid having a mudguard.
