Easy to use
by John P on 19/10/2020

Moved to clipless pedals and chose these as double sided and easy to clip out. Been out 3 times and not had any issues with clip in or out. The double side has helped just need more practice at getting clipped in first time without looking.

Very good clipless pedal (for newbies)
by Anonymous user on 11/10/2020

Excellent clipless pedal for a rider new to using clipless pedals. Hardest part of installation was removing old pedals. Very easy to clip in to, and more importantly clip out of (just make sure you adequately tighten the clips on your shoes - I didn't and one came loose making it hard to clip out - my fault entirely. Once tightened up, they clip straight out).. Much better than standard pedals (particularly for climbing) and far safer than pedals with toe clips which these replaced. Highly recommended. Now trying to persuade my wife to give these a go

Shimano PD-ED500 Pedals
by Anonymous user on 06/10/2020

Excellent priced Shimano pedals. Ease of getting feet in and out of pedals and a strong platform make them a really super pair of pedals. Being double sided is also a plus. Shimano quality you can trust.

So easy
by Sharon H on 21/09/2020

I tried other cleats but struggled to release feet as have weak ankle joints. These are so easy to click into and release. Although for mtb I have them on my road bike

Easy Peasy
by Anonymous user on 24/08/2020

Great looking touring pedal. My first clipless pedals and so easy to clip in and out of. Lovely sparkle in the sunlight but do scratch easily. Maybe need to tighten on my next outing as out the saddle was a little worrying, thought I was going to pull out but I didn’t. Totally recommend for a newbie like me. X

Great product
by Zoe H on 09/08/2020

My first time for using clipless, and I wish I’d done it ages ago instead of being terrified! Using them on my road bike with shoes that have the option of SPD or SPD SL cleat fittings. I was so worried, but practised round the block for about 15 minutes about 8pm the night I got them, then did a 30 mile ride with them the next day. I think I’ve set the tension about halfway but feel they could be tighter as they’re amazingly easy to clip out of. I actually found it a bit more tricky to clip in, but practised during my ride and it got easier. They seem sturdy and look pretty smooth. I’m sure some would say they’re too weighty, but I’m just thrilled I can use them with much more confidence than I ever thought I’d have! 10/10 from me 👍🏼👍🏼

Clipless Road Pedals Guide

Clipless Road Pedals Guide

Considered essential for road riding and events. Offering better support for improved efficiency, clipless road pedals feature a larger SPD-SL style cleat that is attached to your shoe.

Three bolt cleats have a much larger surface area than two-bolt MTB clipless pedals, which means there is better power transfer for performance and speed on the road. Power is transferred on the up-stroke as well as the down-stroke.

By aligning the cleat correctly your foot will be in the right place on the pedal. This optimises power from the leg thus maximising output from each pedal stroke. Injury can be prevented by locating the foot straight and avoiding any twisting or poor foot placement.

  • Increased efficiency
  • More comfort
  • Prevents injury
  • Specific shoes are essential
  • Shoes cannot be walked in
  • Mud/soil badly affects cleats and pedals

Cleats and Float

Cleats come with pedals though there are options and preferences involved. A cleat will have a certain amount of float. This is the amount of rotation the foot has before becoming unclipped. Novice or newcomers to clipless riding will prefer more float.

Shimano make this easy by having colour coding

Yellow cleats give 6° of float

Yellow

Yellow cleats give 6° of float. Best for novice clipless riders, you foot is free to twist a little before unclipping.

Blue cleats allow 2° of float

Blue

Blue cleats allow 2° of float. For intermediate riders who are comfortable with being clipped in, a greater knowledge of cleat placement needs less float.

Red cleats are fixed and give no float

Red

Red cleats are fixed and give no float. For racers and those who want the most power transfer.

Three-bolt cleat/pedal compatibility table

There are several brands of three-bolt road shoes and each will the right type of cleat fitted to your shoe. However, they all fit to three-bolt road shoes. See the table below for full pedal compatibility.
