just what we needed.

As I was struggling to get on with my clip less pedals these are a god send and I'll probably order a pair for the missus.

Can't work out how to attach them

Bought these as an experiment - was going to see if my teenage son would like them, but no instructions with them and I can't work out how to attach to any of the pedals in our bike shed! They look like a good idea if can be attached! Cost virtually nothing, so little lost....

Excellent value

I was buying for my daughter and as I am a novice was unsure whether the price was per pair - it never stated this. Well they do come as a pair! I ordered two - the others won't be wasted though. I also was unsure what size to order but thankfully read a review where someone had said what size suitable - this would be useful when purchasing. Nice little touch of haribo in with them - not sure if this was just because it was around Easter!

Product is excellent as was the service from Tredz. I found them to be less fussy without the straps

Zefal toeclips

I have bought a number of pairs of these toeclips for different bikes over the years. They are easy to get your feet into and out of and give you security as you cycle, particularly when standing up on the pedals. Great value for money, prompt delivery and a very cute surprise extra in the package which I loved. Perfect!

Brilliant Product

Completely solve the problem of slippery pedals. Slip on and off with ease. Good price. Prompt delivery. Following another review I bought Nyloc nuts and bolts to fit and it took 15 minutes to be up and away.

Great Product

I tried using cleats on a previous bike and just couldn't get on with them. Gave these a go on my new road bike and were just what I was after, a great compromise. Large for size8 shoes work fine. Excellent value!

Zefal Toe Clips

Excellent product for everyday cycling. These clips stop your feet slipping on the pedals but still allow you to ride your bike wearing normal footwear, from trainers to sandals.

Cleats aren't always best.

Ok, so I use cleats on my best road bike, but for all my other bikes these are the business, and I cannot understand why they aren't more widely used. They give 90%+ of cleats' efficiency, particularly uphill. Your feet aren't locked to the pedal on a treacherous single-track descent, or as you thread through traffic on a dark, wet evening. You can vary your footwear according to conditions or if you are mixing cycling with another activity.

Pedal Buying Guide

Pedal Guide

What type of pedals do I need?

Bike pedals are an essential upgrade on every bike. Road bike pedals are the first upgrade for every dedicated roadie. Mountain bike pedals are also an essential component and mounting bikers can choose between MTB clipless and flat pedals depending on the type of riding (clips for racing and flats for fun – as well as personal preference).

There are essentially two main types of pedals.
Flat pedals – traditional style where your foot simply rests on the pedal.
Clipless pedals – SPD or SPD-SL style that require cleats and shoes to clip in to the pedal.

Flat Pedals

Platform Pedals

These are designed for mountain bike and BMX riding. Platform pedals offer good foot support. Pins grip the sole of your shoe to keep your foot in place while still giving you the freedom to take your foot off whenever you like. They can be made of plastic resin or metal for greater durability. These are particularly good for control when you're riding off-road on tricky terrain. The main advantage of flat pedals is you aren't attached to your bike, so can get your foot down quickly.

Cage Pedals

Traditional cycling pedals that are still very popular on hybrid and touring bikes. Cage pedals are a type of flat pedal that has a metal cage around the central spindle. Because cage pedals have less material than platform pedals, they tend to be lighter. They are often found on city or hybrid bikes as they don't offer as much grip for off-road riding as platform pedals, due to their smaller surface area. Some caged pedals come with toe clips or straps to fasten around your foot for greater efficiency.

Clipless pedals

Clipless Road

Offering better support, for improved efficiency, clipless road pedals feature a larger SPD-SL style cleat that is attached to your shoe with three bolts.

Clipless road pedals attach to road bike shoes using the three-bolt cleat system.

Three bolt cleats have a much larger surface area than two-bolt MTB clipless pedals, which means there is better power transfer for efficiency and speed on the road.

The drawback is that the way the cleats fit to the sole of the shoe makes it hard to walk. There are several brands of three-bolt road shoes and each will the right type of cleat fitted to your shoe. However, they all fit to three-bolt road shoes.

Clipless MTB

Designed for mountain bikes these pedals will keep your foot in place over rough ground. They are easy to clip in and out of. The small cleat SPD style cleat is attached to your shoe with two bolts. Pedals that use the two-bolt cleat system are commonly called SPD pedals, after Shimano SPD, the primary brand for this system.

Clipless MTB pedals let you connect your shoes to them, for greater power and control.

Although they are traditionally off-road pedals, they are very popular for leisure and commuter riding, as they are easier to use and to walk in than road clipless pedals.

Most clipless mtb pedals are Shimano SPD, or are compatible with them, such as Ritchey and Wellgo. However, there are several brands that make pedals and cleats that are only compatible within that brand, such as Crank Bros, MKS, Time Atac and Look Quartz.

Do I need cycling specific shoes?

Clipless pedals require specific cycling shoes. These will be either SPD (MTB) and/or SPD-SL (Road) compatible.

While flat pedals don’t require cycling specific shoes the performance of these pedals will be greatly improved with flat pedal specific shoes. Flat pedal MTB shoes feature a stiff ‘sticky rubber’ sole that offers better grip and support.

Do I need to buy cleats with clipless pedals?

All clipless pedals are supplied with the appropriate cleats so you will only need to buy separate cleats if you use more than one pair of shoes or the supplied cleats become worn out over time.
