Mountain Bike Tyres

Getting the right amount of grip and rolling resistance with the right mountain bike tyres can make a real difference to the quality of your ride. For any mountain biker MTB tyres are probably one of the most important performance upgrades.

Types of MTB tyre: Cross country tyres are the fastest rolling MTB tyres as they are built for climbing speed with just low-profile nobs for grip. Wider with more aggressive tread trail tyres offer more grip on loose terrain. Enduro and downhill tyres are the most aggressive type of mountain bike tyre, these also have reinforced side walls to protect against damage on very rough trails.

Mountain bike tyre sizes: Tyres for mountain bikes are available for the different wheel sizes from 26” up to 29”. The most popular are 27.5” tyres with 29er tyres a close second. Wider tyres offer more cushioning as well as better grip, but narrower tyres are faster rolling.

Tubeless MTB tyres: Look for tubeless ready tyres for your tubeless wheels. Tubeless mountain bike tyres are filled with sealant that self-heals small punctures, so you don’t have to waste time changing tubes at the trailside.

MTB tyre brands: Maxxis MTB tyres are probably the most popular brand with UK mountain bikers and they offer a tyre for every situation. Continental tyres are very good quality while Specialized offer the most affordable performance tyre for mountain bikes.
